My former partner in business had a pit in his garage. It was very handy, and definitely cheaper than a lift. The biggest problem he had was in the late winter it would fill up with ground water, owing to the fact that Sandpoint is adjacent to Lake Pend Oreille, and any hole in the ground, basement, crawl space, pit, etc., WILL fill up with water. He had a sump pump in there, but it was fruitless, because the water would just seep back in as fast as he pumped it out. I suppose if he had allowed enough room when he excavated for the pit to water proof the outside of the walls and under the slab somehow, it might have helped.
If you are in an area where ground water is not a problem or where you can assure a positive drain away, you would be good to go with a pit.
