Mark,
This may sound off the wall but I found it was one of my issues when my 55 began to run poorly and then ultimately did not want to run at all.
There is a screw that passes through the distributor housing, which delivers voltage to the points. This screw is sheathed in a protective fiber or plastic insulator that keeps it from grounding out against the distributor. After rebuilding my carburetor, replacing wires, plugs, points, condenser, fuel pump, filter etc. I found this little 45 year old gem had developed a crack, and would allow the screw which carried voltage to ground out against the distributor. I replaced it with a piece of shrink-wrap. The truck fired up the first crank and has been running well ever since.
Just an observation.
Hope it helps.
Mike
