There's an art in pulling the crank with your fingers and not holding it tightly with your thumb in case the engine decides to kick it back. When cranking a Model A or Model T, you retard the spark. I've seen a severely retarded engine (no gifted jokes please)run backwards briefly. I never got hurt cranking my Model A, but the Model A sure suffered when it wouldn't start. Those fenders still bear the impression on the crank when I got fed up one cold dark night.
