My 1957 W200 w/ 315 poly v8 smokes from its oil filler pipe. I know that's not good news, but this truck is going to keep hauling hay while it's got oil pressure. Haven't done a compression test; not sure I want to know till next summer.
I've looked all over for the road draft tube, under the car, using mirrors, etc. I believe it's supposed to be at the back of the engine somewhere, outlet near the valley--but I don't see it. Can someone tell me exactly where it's supposed to be?
This engine has some kind of boy-racer manifold and a big 4 bbl (both to be replaced). I'm thinking maybe the previous owner blocked off the outlet for the draft tube or covered it up with the fancy intake.
What's conventional wisdom about crankcase ventilation on 315 poly motors? Supposing the draft tube flange is blocked or covered, what would be a quick fix? I could put an old Mopar breather w/ a hose connection into one of the valve covers (yes, would require cutting hole) and plumb it to a PCV valve and the carb. Or, it could be done the other way around--use the breather cap w/ the hose connection on the oil filler pipe, plumb it to the PCV and put an ordinary breather on one of the valve covers.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
