Just had a look at the back of the valve cover. On each head, at the back and just below each valve cover is a small blanking plate held on w/ two bolts. But they're the same on each side. There's nothing back there but the distributor, and no tube going down f/ the engine on either side. A mystery.
You are right--the big hub nut is a hex. Rather than just bash it off with a chisel I bought one online. Won't hurt to wait a couple days.
