Much like a U-Joint will fail if it's installed incorrectly and never rotates, I'm sure these can fail as well if there is a lot of straight line driving.
On my 46 Power Wagon, I found the lower bearings toast, probably because of pore lube and over weight (I think it once had a gin pole).
