I once had a braden MU-2 with Capstan. The shaft was one long continuous shaft that went thru the drum. On the end was a quarter turn fitting. The capstan had a mating quarter turn fitting. The capstan could be removed when not in use. It did extend quite a ways out from the winch body. If memory serves me, when the capstan was in place, it was out near the end of the bumper.
