Since the capstan load would be far less then the 8,000# winch rating, a much smaller shaft would do. Maby drll and tap the OE shaft eend, and bolt teh extension to it? Then add the capstan, and an outer support.
Though I think I prefer the longer shaft that Braden used, capstan spool out side of the frame. And my personal ideal would be a 90° drive, with the capstan shaft vertical. Good for all angles that way.
Maybe next winch overhaul/resto, while it's apart, I'll drill and bore it for a 1" shaft and key. Just an inch deep? I can add build & add capstan stuff later.
