It used to be common practice many years ago, but I haven't seen one of the old type for a long time. There were at least 2 different types I worked with, one had a nut that locked the support washers in place, just threaded onto the shaft from one side, the other type used slotted screws - one washer was welded to the shaft and the other clamped the diaphragm - think the nuts were captive/welded to the fixed plate/washer. You could buy the diaphragms pre-cut to suit, or buy/use material designed for it and cut your own.
