One square foot of 1/16" of ummmm, Buna-N or was it 'nygen', 'gasket' made about 9. Cost $10 from Macmaster-Car or such.
Silicone or Neoprene do NOT work. The last for a few minutes only.
The gas and ethanol resistant stuff has been around since wwII, not new tech or hard to come by. Basically, artificial rubber.
I've been running one for maybe two years now with no difficulties.
But most rods are peened, and would be harder to change than the ones with a nut. And they seem hardened, not easy to make. Maybe stainless would be tough enough, without tempering, and still workable, to make a new one with a nut?
On re-assembley, do NOT hold things centered, DO allow the spring to push it to end of stroke. That will mean it can go to end of stroke without stretching/tearing. And end of stroke is where they spend their time- either pumped full, or evaporated empty, still end of stroke one end or the other.
