I agree with you DB but I also think electronic ignition gives a better more exact timing. Less mechanical moving parts moving about that do wear and cause timing to drift some. I think starting is a tad easier and I think you can get a hotter spark which may ever so slightly increase performance and better mpg.
With that said on a flathead engine I wouldnt think the change over would be worth the hassles with not much benefit to show.
On a V8 or high performance engine it can help a lot.
