I used 2-way lock nuts (also called center lock nuts) with some red lock-tight.
On the front axle where I re-used the differential, I still used the clips too, figured some extra protection couldn't hurt. They don't have to provide much force, it's just to prevent the nut from rotating. None of the ones on either axle had been forced away in all the time they were in the truck, so I think they'll be fine.
