Ring Gear Nuts: Retainers or Lock Washers?

I'm reinstalling the ring and pinion on the 6x6, and I'm using new grade 8 bolts and nuts on the ring gear. I'm reusing the old nut retainers, and it seems that they are pretty soft, enough that they are cold flowing when I torque the nuts, which makes me wonder if they will hold the torque. Would it be better to use grade 8 lock washers, or are the retainers more secure?
