Points, plugs, condenser, adjust timing, carb overhaul are all required from time to time.Though nothing runs better than Holley 4 bbls, they are notorious for leaky gaskets and bad powervalves-rebuild it regularly.Keep track of your gas mileage, when it drops to 10, tune it up!.Include checking vaccuum advance and centrifugal too-lube the pins under the breaker plate.
Probably the most cost efficient modification is dual exhaust(local smog laws permitting-depends on year of vehicle too).Duals will gain mileage and performance too-both are increases in efficiency.I'd expect about 15 mpg out of a normal van/pickup.
Re: stock exhaust systems-Mufflers plug up with carbon, also the stock head pipe is 2 layers thick,(it's quieter that way) inner layer can burn out,wad itself up and plug exhaust system. Exhaust systems need inspection/maintenance too.
Tune-Ups will pay for themselves in gas savings-spark plugs cost $1.50, less than a gallon of gas!
