You make good points. I will try it again with studs, but more sealer this time. I can't believe how rusty it got just sitting for a few years. The poor head's getting pretty beat up by now, and I just broke one of the studs off flush with the block. I wonder how many drill bits and easy-outs it'll take to turn the broken stud into an oblong mess of a mangled-up hole. I will definitely use sealer on the head gasket --- the surface is so rough it'll need all the help it can get.
I got a kick out of the comment about buying the best gaskets I can get. I wish I had a choice. As far as I can determine, the only gasket available for that engine (herc ZXA) is the head gasket and those are only NOS parts from Jerry Biro in Ohio. They don't seem to sell exhaust gasket stock anywhere so last time I had it apart I made exhaust gaskets by laminating several layers of asbestos paper with red RTV. They seemed to hold up okay for what little I ran it.
The only reason I'm putting so much work into it is that it's a beautiful little flathead with only 600 hrs on it and the cylinders are like new. Once I get it worked over it should run a long time.
