Sounds like an electrical connection issue. Weird things like this are often rooted in poor ground connections. Check all of the ground straps and connections. I would even add additional ground straps between the body and frame, engine and frame and engine and body. I would make sure that the battery ground is clean and tight. I would also suggest oversized battery cables.
I added additional ground straps to my truck. I was seeing static discharges in the electronic ignition and arching between the body and transmission. The real issue was that the battery ground strap went to the engine. But the engine and transmission sit on insulating pads which kills the ground to the frame and body. Once the engine, frame and body were well grounded to each other, the truck also started running much better and all arching stopped.
I also fixed a friends car that would not start from time to time but would run fine most of the time. Similar to what you see but much more frequent. It turned out to be a loose ground strap that was really buried and almost impossible to get to. The dealer never could figure out the issue.
