hi chris, i have restored many of the door latch assemblies and i take the springs out before i zinc plate the latch assemby. i havent tested the springs for hardness but i would guess in the 45-50 on the rockwell scale. i find that the springs are very strong but also brittle and they like to break. a little softer material wont be as brittle and hopefully still provide enough strentgh to operate the mechanism ok. hope you can make a set. probably a market for them.
