I dug through the bin of springs, and found something. A spiral chime from a mantle clock. Sure worked nice. Springs and a bit of lube really worked wonders. So I decided to lube up the other latch. Some grease, work the handle, and SPOING! The easy-to-get-to handle return spring busted. So I wound up another spring. Too bad it took me two tries, now I'm out of bonger.
Turns out both springs were spirals, like a clock spring. 1/16 x 3/16 flat spring stock. They are usually wound after tempering, so I dove in.
And I always though those needle-nose pliers with two round jaws were for electical wire. Now I'm convinced they are spring winding pliers. ;^)
