Short stroke and big bore = more rpm = more power. Your 237 is the best flattie Chrysler built for that concept.
The two biggest design flaws in the flat head from a power stand point is poor breathing and a cam ground for gut wrenching torque rather than max horseies. Plus very wimpy valve springs that allow float very early.
Go to a dual carb or 2bbl setup, headers, and get the cam reground to longer duration. Cam lift is limited by the valve hitting the head, but maybe a bit can be gained there too. More lift = faster opening, which helps suck air in behind the valve. Stock valve springs have about 40# of seat pressure, modern engines have over 100, race engines closer to 200. Much revs to be gained right there.
