I really like my flatbed and find that it is much more useful for my needs than a pickup bed. It is nice in that it does not have permanent side boards or header rack. I can't tell you how many times I have loaded it with a forklift - double pallets of shingles, landscaping blocks, mulch, etc. Easy to do from the back or either side.
If I were going to build one, it would be like the one in this image. It has permanent side boards. I would make them removable. I like this type of bed because you have a clear place to stand while tying down loads. The in-board side boards also allow for a nice place to carry tools, chainsaws, gas cans, etc. The one in the image is also 9-feet in length. I wish I had that extra foot.
