we have a harman pellet stove, that was purchased as an insert for our fireplace and used in place of burning wood on special occasions. the wood was messy and provided no real heat. the harman will burn 40 lbs of pellets in about 1.5 days and keep the house warm if we want it too. when we run it, i turn the thermostats in the house's three zones 2 degrees below the stove. those zones don't cycle nearly as much. the stove has been a surprising device in that it produces almost no ash compared to straight wood - figure you have to dump the ashes after running 5 bags through it. it is a fill, set it and forget it deal that you may wish to consider as a supplement to your regular heat. rice coal stoves are similar, but way more efficient than pellets. paul in ny could provide more input as i believe he heats his outbuildings with pellets.... sometimes two sources of supply is a good thing.
