I am the fella that came up with the idea of putting a 305 GMC V6 in a M-37. Well these engines are EXTREMELY Heavy (about 1000K lbs) Not at all fuel efficent and are VERY SLOW turners....It would be a good enigne if you were to convert your truck to a log skidder maybe.
THe engine in gasoline form was availble in 305, 351, 401, and 478 CID version that all used the same block etc. There was a diesel version called a "toro Flow" GMC used this engine from the late '50's thru the mid 70's.
There was also a V8 version made that was in the 600 CID range as well as a ....V-12 version made.
I would go with a Mopar small block...Or a 4 cyl diesel like Perkins or Cummins.
