I switched my WDX to 4.89s in 1988 so I could drive my truck to the Iowa Rally (320 miles) the gear change was well worth it. I would run at 50 -55 mph with a 237 engine (ind 7a), and 9.00 x 16 tires. The 237 was then replaced by a 265 (ind 32) and I ran 38" swampers on custom rims this allowed me to run 55-60. I also switched to a NP420 to give me synchro 3 & 4. If you do a lot of highway driving the gear change is well worth the trouble. Now that I have a trailer I would probably retain the 5.83s. Also a brake booster will do wonders for your brakes. My
46 with the booster will stop as well or even better than my '55 did with discs on all four wheels.
