I have a 230 PW with a non-synchro trans and a good strong engine. I put 4.89s in and have mixed views. I still only go 50 mph on the highway, but now it doesn't sound like it is going to explode. Low speed work is ok also, since you have plenty of lower gears to use. Worst situation is shifting from 3rd to 4th on even a slight upgrade. The drop in rpm (aggravated by the slower shifting on a non-synchro trans) is too much and it can be a struggle. This would be WAY better with a 5 speed.
I also have a 251 PW with synchro trans. This has 5.83s but could easily handle the 4.89s. The engine is a little stronger (and that is all you need) and the shifting is much faster so you don't lose precious speed.
