I found my good 4.89 gears in a $400.00 parts truck, so I felt I couldn't afford not to install them. You will probably find yourself starting out in 1st gear more often when carrying a full load of gravel or railroad ties. In 1st gear with no load or with the transfer case in low range, the 20% differance betweeen the 5.83 and 4.89 gearsets is so small it will hardly be noticed, if at all. I find that the increased momentum gained with the 4.89 gears tends to carry the truck over small hills without the loss in speed that occurred when I was running 5.83s. Longer hills require downshifting regardless of gearing. Bottom line: Keeps up with traffic better without sacrificing working power.
