I cannot say if it was worth it or not, because I have not done it.

Rather, on my M37, I've gone a different route.

Staying with the stock gears and tires, I'm putting in a 318 V-8. The V-8 can easily handle the increase in RPM needed to get from 45 mph (2800 rpm) to 55 mph (3200 rpm). Of course, the transfer case noise will increase.

The posts I've seen about the 230 with 4.89's pretty much say it is OK for flat land but on any kind of a hill the 230 does not have the power anyway, making any speed increase with the 4.89's a moot point. A 251 or 265 might do a lot better.

The gear swap will eat up about $1200, less if you are lcky, more if you need bearings. I can do a 318 swap with a decent used motor for a lot less than that.

Of course, the biggest benefit from 230's is that it is not an obvious and drastic change like the 318, which will make some purists cringe.
