Not sure which axle you're referring to, but I learned a fair bit about the Dodge corporate 8-3/4 axle after breaking one on my Sno-Cat. It turns out they made them with 3 different spline counts, each finer than the preceding one. I think the coarse one is 10 spline and the fine one is 30, or something like that. It turns out the one I needed was the medium one, and that was the hardest to find.
On the 8-3/4 axles, the two coarser spline counts are cut, and the fine one (the newest and most common) is rolled. Note that the rolled ones stick out as much as the stick in, since the metal has been displaced (forged) into position, whereas on the cut ones, they only stick in. That means that it ought to be possible to take a fine-splined shaft, turn it down half way, and then cut coarse splines into it and only loose a little bit of strength compared to a factory-cut coarse splined shaft. I was almost at the point of trying this, but thankfully didn't have to.
