I have never seen or heard of the factory installing dual tanks on a FFPW, but who knows if it ever happened. My recollection is that the export PWs had larger capacity single fuel tanks, and I think the WCs had larger tanks too. One of those might work for you.
I installed a second fuel tank in my 62 WM300. It's a regular 18 gal FF style tank, and I had the filler neck moved to the opposite corner. There is about 1/4" gap between the two, and it works great. I like separate tanks in case there's a problem with one of them, but I've never had such a problem, so it might be overkill.
I remember reading about someone who took a stock tank, cut it down the centerline, and welded in an extension to stretch the tank to fit between the frame rails. Seems like a slick upgrade if someone has the skills/money to do it. One sending unit, one filler neck, looks factory, no transfer switch, and uses the two original tank straps.
