I dropped the gas tank from my '54 FFPW to inspect and clean it. Much to my surprise, the tank and sending unit are in great condition. The inside of the tank is bright and shiny. I suspect the tank was replaced at one time.
I cleaned the tank with water and gas tank cleaner and dried it with a hot air gun. After letting the tank sit a couple days, I noticed just a faint trace of rust around the drain plug.
Now I'm wondering if I should go ahead and use gas tank etch and then seal the tank with Hirsch tank sealer as I originally planned. Or, would I actually be doing more harm than good.
Does anybody know what the coating, is on the inside of the tank? Will etching the coating destroy it. Would I be better off sealing the tank without using the etcher since the tank is in such good condition?
