when caps go bad the rubber gasket is usually the culprit. they swell up and get too large and whenthe system needs to release some pressure it CANT. that alone can cause overheating. they way to check the non PW type caps is remove cap, and if the rubber seal is larger than the metal behind it then it is bad and cannot release pressure correctly. it can really reak havoc on later model vehicel with watertemp controlled emmsion control parts. throws them out of whach and can cause the computer to kill the engine
