I hear little stories like that pretty often from guys who worked on some project or another. Good thing the inspectors were inspecting this time. I suppose the thinking is that once it's in the mud nobody will know (like the rifle recently found in an old retaining wall here in Wallace). I should have mentioned that one of the other reasons civil engineers use a large safety factor is to allow margin for poor workmanship. In the case of wood-framed buildings, I think the main reason for the safety factor is plumbers who see every piece of wood as an obstacle in the way of their pipes -- obstacles that are easy to deal with these days thanks to their sawzall and hole hawg.
