I spent 27 years as a Firefighter and I can tell you they are one of the best life savers out there. I started before they were invented. Don't take that chance if you value your own or others lives. I was on many calls over the years where the occupants very likely would not have gotten out without injury were it not for a working detector. I also helped carry bodies out from residences that detectors had batteries removed from or were otherwise inoperative.
