Very well said. If your detector keeps going off there is likely some type of problem with it, the battery or where it's installed. I've had detectors since they first came out in several different homes and the only time I had them go off was when the battery was too low.
We also have several rentals which are required to have working detectors and only had a couple complaints which turned out to be related to the cooking prowess of the tenant. =)
My experiences and personal opinion is you are being foolish to do without them. They are pretty trouble free and do save many lives every year. I strongly urge everyone to install and make sure proper detectors are in good working order.
