I have 2 that got rusty, apparently open with the carb off for a long time and maybe sitting out. Anyway, they look pretty gunky. Maybe somebody ran it a little while with them stuck. This isn't going to be a fancy engine. I just want it to hold compression on all cylinders. I'd like to go at it with a wire wheel on an angle grinder but thought I better ask first. Assuming the metal is good under the gunk, will this make them too rough to seat? How about I scrape them carefully with my pocket knife? Sandpaper (going around and around)? Coarse valve grinding compound? Dremel tool with a flap wheel? Dremel tool with a wire wheel? What I'm not going to do is strip the block and take it to a machine shop for a proper valve grind. I think I'll replace the rustiest valve that was stuck open with the best one from my junk engine. Much as I'd like to clean them all up, I do think I'll pull the valves from the other cylinders (3-6) since they were marked as having good compression.
