I've been cleaning up the top of blocks and pistons with a wire wheel in an angle grinder for years, but I keep a pretty light touch on it. Will follow your advice on using the little wire wheel in the drill for the valve seats. I have a set of those cheesy little wheels somewhere. They never had enough muscle for anything serious but maybe they're just the ticket here.

As for welding, I highly doubt the 230s had sodium filled valves, and especially not intake valves. As it happens I saved the bad valve from my last honda valve grind so I figured I'd just braze one of those to the top side of a junk 230 valve and that should keep it nice and square.

As it happens all the intake valves from my junk engine are worse than the worst one (the stuck one) from the donor engine, so I think I better just clean that one up and use it. there was some rust on the stem, and I nicked the head with vise grips (had to wiggle it back and forth to get it loose), but the seating surface looks better than any of the ones from the junk engine, and the stem seems to have cleaned up pretty well with the wire wheel (lightly) and crocus cloth. It's not like new but hopefully it will be close enough for government work. Now the question is what condition the seats will be in once I get the gunk and rust off of them.
