You have a valid question and the answer should be in the Owners manual. The winch nomenclature plate on my M-35 advises to only use 1st gear with transfer and pto in low ( M-35's have 2spd pto's) when using drive train to assist when winching. there are some varibles ( as mentioned earlier ) as the ratio on the winch will change as the drum spools up with cable. Heck if no one comes through with correct gear setup then put her out on the pavement put out some cable, start out using 1st and low transfer and see how even she drives/pulls with the winch ingaged. RPM shouldn't matter as it is equally applied to both the driveline and the pto ( which turns at 61% of engine speed )
Best regards
