Back in my racing days, I just put moly rings into everything I had and never looked back. However, I haven't played with this stuff for a decade.
Now I'm freshening up a perfectly good running 318, I'm wondering what rings to toss in it.
I'll deglaze the cylinders. They have minimal taper. No overbore called for, which is good since engine is already overbore. (It's actually a 327 now.)
I like the oil retention of moly rings, but how does the moly insert hold up with bore taper?
In my experience, cast iron rings simply wear out too fast.
Chrome rings induce more bore wear, which is undersirable in a tapered bore, especially one that at max overbore anyway.
Also, how are the overlapping rings holding up? Or are standard rings better?
Rest of engine looks good. Bearings don't appear to have ever been used, they look so good. I'll put in Clevite 77's anyway. Couple of lifters are flat. Cam looks OK, but regrinds are cheap. Will toss in a Cloyes timing chain, new oil pump, etc. Debating whether to do a valve job or just lap them. Engine was not burning oil, ran good. I am hot tanking the block though, and adding the usuals like brass soft plugs, etc.
I've heard the trick setup for 318's with manual transmissions is to get a truck thrust bearing, which has 40% more surface area than the passenger car thrust bearing. Anyone do this swap?
Any other 318 tips?
