When i dropped the pan on my 56 C3PW to clean out the sludge,i checked the main and rod bearings.Using good old Plastigage, the rods were at .0015-.0020 and the mains at .0030 to .0035. I am satisfied with the rod bearing clearance, but not with the mains. Now for the $250.00 question.I am not ready to overhaul this motor yet,as it runs well and is otherwise sound.(compression, oil pressure ,oil and water tight)I have heard old timers (older than my truck) talk of shimming the main bearings with shim stock.Good idea? Bad idea? Reasonable temporary bandaid? Comments?
