An ammeter will tell you whether or not the generator or alternator is charging the battery and whether it is keeping up with all the lights and electric motors drawing upon the system. A voltmeter will tell you the condition of the battery. Neither one will make your truck go up in flames unless you do something very wrong in how you wire them up. You just have to ask yourself which is more important to you - to know the condition of the generator or the condition of the battery.
