One issue I see with the use of hydraulic fluid in an automotive braking system is the viscocity change with temperature. Brake fluid, be it DOT 3, 4 or 5 maintains acceptable viscocity over a larger temperature range than hydraulic fluid does. There are winter, summer and extreme cold hydraulic oils; not so for brake fluids. I realize this may be a moot point is you use synthetic hydraulic oil, but then you get into the cost issue.
One last point, is the lawyer issue; if you were involved in a wreck and someone found out you were running hydraulic oil (and not a D.O.T. approved brake fluid) in your brake system, open the liability flood gates.
