I agree slavery is wrong, wrong, and wrong. Nowadays we they don't have slaves. They just pay poor desperate people $1 a day to sew sneakers and soccer balls and that way the bosses don't have the responsibility of actually owning them. If they owned the workers they'd have to feed, clothe and house them. They'd have to feed, clothe and house their children and the old ones who couldn't work any more. The modern way is so much more economical since they only pay for them while they're fit to work, and the slaves/workers have to find their own bowl of rice, slum shack, and rags to wear.
The other thing people forget is that there used to be slavery everywhere. There's slavery throughout the bible, and everybody thought it was just fine so long as the slaves obeyed their masters and the masters were kind to their slaves. The Indians enslaved each other all over North America before the whites got here. On the north coast, for example, slaves weren't allowed to flatten their children's skulls like high-class people did. In the American slave trade, who did the wholesalers buy their slaves from? African slavers, who went out in the jungle and captured them and brought them to wholesale slave markets in the ports on the coast. And what color were those slavers? As black as their captives, though generally more devout in their religion.
But yeah, it's all ancient history at this point. I haven't heard of any Chehalis demanding compensation from the Haidas because their ancestors were hauled away in slave raids 300 years ago. Life sucked for most people back then. Now is now.
