IT is amazing regarding the level of ignorance about this in the country, as you point out.
Some groups want to erase any discussion of or symbols of a time in our history they do not approve of. An amazing level of censorship and political correctness.
Sometimes I see cars owned by men who are members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans descendants group. As a sign of their membership in this group, they have a decal of the flag shown by Will on their rear bumper. 99% of the public, including the people who get hysterical about the "battle flag", have no reaction at all to the flag on the bumper, which is the 1st National Confed flag.
Unfortunately some racist groups have co-opted the "battle flag", and that symbol is thus "toxic". As such it cuts off any discussion of our history, like Gary mentions.
