I believe you would need a resistor to drop the 12V to around 6V for the gauge to read correctly. I think somewhere around a 5watt resistor should be close. It should be a heavier duty wire wound one if you can get one. On the VPW page it shows a Dale CW-5 resistor for this purpose.
