Steering box removal

Ok, I need to remove the steering box on my 48 PW, does this require removal of the whole steering wheel column or can it be removed from the steering shaft at the frame.
I have loosened off the pinch clamp where the shaft goes into the box, but I am not sure I am heading in the right direction, so can anyone give me a bit of a detailed description on how to proceed before I damage something.
