I have a curiosity question for you folks out there. In the process of rebuilding my 230 flathead six and my 4-speed non-synchro tranny, I discovered that the engine block and the tranny housing have a brownish, rust-looking paint on the inside. It seems to be pretty tough, not even coming off very well in the hot tank. I'm just wondering what it's there for.
I had the tranny housing hot-tanked and checked for cracks (yes, I know I may have been overly cautious to want to do that...) Anyway, after loosening up the paint in the hot tank, I was afraid some of it might come off and get into the gears and bearings, so I scrubbed the rest of it off down to the bare metal. I haven't gotten the engine block back from the machine shop.
Does anyone know anything about this?
Also, another curiosity question:
When I replaced the glass in my truck, I seem to remember that it was all safety glass, with the double-layered glass with the plastic in between. I think this was even the case with the side windows. I think modern trucks don't have this feature on the side windows, so now I'm wondering about the original PW glass.
What do y'all know?
Matt
