If this is a 61-71 dodge:
Check the drag link and tie rod ends for play
You can get a drag link from Rare Auto Parts
and tie rod ends from NAPA.
Check the TOP of the steering box. The top is aluminum. If you have pulled hard on the steering wheel attempting to do a tight turn the top can (and does) crack and/or fail!!!
A using steering box is about $75.00 in good condition. There is a link from Joe's site or from Kris's site to a small company that will rebuild the steering box from $250.00.
If your steering is that loose check it TODAY. You can check the drag link easiest (it fails first also). Just have someone move the steering wheel back and forth and watch the ends of the drag link - ANY looseness and the drag link needs to be replaced.
While you are checking the drag link watch the shaft the pitman arm attachs to (output shaft of the steering box). The shaft should not move up/down or side to side - it should only rotate - any up/down/side to side and the steering box needs replacing/rebuilding/adjustment).
Also check the flexible joint between the steering column and the steering box input shaft. Sometimes the flexible connecter getts old and tears. When you turn a 61-71 dodge be gentle when you get to the turn locks or you may have an adventure.
Good luck
Oscar
