Chains make a HUGE difference. De-airing makes some difference but:
1) little difference on bias ply till very low pressures which make losing the bead a danger
2) considerable difference on radials even with moderate pressure decrease (like 50%) but increase risk of sidewall damage (steel casing Michelins much better in sidewall protection than the usual polyester light truck radials; radial Swampers are nylon).
3) lockers also make a big difference, almost as much as chains. Don't be too afraid of front lockers. I have rear and front Lockrights on my M37 and drive it on icy streets and highways in 4WD. With power steering, I can't feel any difference when hubs are locked but it's in 2WD; when in 4WD I still can make tight U-turns, safely change lanes, drive at 50 mph, etc. Consider a front Lockright as well as a rear. With 2 lockers and decent tires (some kind of mud tread) you won't need chains much.
4) You still can get stuck with lockers and chains. Winches work even in the worst conditions as long as there are anchors, and Pull-Pal has just come out with an 11,000 lb. anchor.
