No, you don't have to update it now, but eventually you'll want to look at stuff that was written in the current version of Java, Flash, XML or whatever, and the old browser in your old browser won't display it, and then when you get the new version of the add-on, it won't work with the old version of the browser.
As for the complaints, what I noticed here is exactly the opposite -- people are complaining that they "upgraded" to Firefox 4.0 and it didn't work as well as the old technology.
