I noticed that the labels on two different bottles of GL-5 gear lube I have say they protect against bronze and copper corrosion.
So, I guess there is no need for special lubes, such as Lubriplate SPO, in winches and steering boxes.
The problem is that some off-brands and specially formulated gear lubes contain reactive sulfur. The sulfur is used as an additive to increase lubrication performance under extreme conditions. But, the sulfur can turn into acid (sulfuric acid, I guess) and corrode copper. We have all seen what sulfuric acid does to copper.
From what I have gathered, just stick to the better brands and stay away from off brands or lubes that are specially formulated for very extreme conditions.
If you are especially concerned, look for lubes that mention their compatibility with bronze and copper.
