You are suggesting he coat the *entire* head gasket with pipe dope?

The head and block should be checked for flatness, as well as a close examination of all surfaces for damage or pitting in isolated spots or areas.

If you look at the specifications for cylinder taper in the old manuals you will find a high figure that no one would use today.

If the surfaces are truly flat, and without injury, a new, good gasket will seal with no assistance [added sealers], assuming it is torqued properly.

Over the years I have had people say, "yeah but.... let's use something?" When pressed, and as long as the particular gasket has no stated restrictions, I have used the Permatex copper spray sealer on head gaskets.

Assembling with good surfaces, new gasket, and proper assembly procedures, I have never had a head gasket leak.

Evaluate the block deck surface, too.
Carefully.
